Coffee and It’s Hidden Fat Content

July 2nd, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Coffee has become the latest food stuff to become glorified and beatified within our fickle media, which is infamous for its capricious nature and rather temperamental alliances. When a particular food type is favoured by the media “gods” it would seem that it will enjoy success in any and every market, appealing to new customers and further solidifying existing customer’s faith. The consumption of the food in question becomes more than a mere biological process; it becomes a means of measuring and ratifying social structure and prestige.

It becomes the latest fashion accessory, an ice breaker and award winner all at the same time. For those who do not enjoy the marvels of the food, they are regarded with bemused contempt and pity, after all they are missing out on a wonderful experience. It should be noted however, that this state of affairs ends up ensuring that the food in question is placed beyond doubt, question or reproach and this skewered presentation of the facts is potentially harmful, and even downright dangerous.

The food that we eat, regardless of what it is must always be regulated with the principle of moderation and balance firmly in mind to ensure that we have a balanced and nutritional diet. Too many people (wrongly) assume that you can never have too much of a good thing, but in reality this is an utter fallacy and one that is cynically exploited and manipulated by the media industry.

Take coffee for example. Whilst receiving critical acclaim and recognition for its remarkable and uncanny ability to handle a myriad of different health complaints from constipation, heart disease and asthma it has been glorified as a super drink, a magic tonic which will cure all ailments and prevent all health problems. This is true, if the coffee is consumed in safe dosages, and spaced over a reasonable period of time, sadly however many people exceed the daily recommended maximum of 400mg of caffeine a day and end up glutting themselves in a short space of time. They suffer from extreme bouts of hyper activity (excess energy) only to suffer from a crashing sag in their energy levels as the day progresses, rendering their effectiveness for even the most simple of tasks, null.

People who consume coffee also justify their mass consumption on the basis that: “coffee has no calories, so what could the harm possibly be?” This is not quite true; coffee like anything else will depend entirely upon what you put in it. Ordinary coffee, the kind that you consume at home contains hardly any, but when you order your coffee from a store, when you throw in the sugar, cream and other things added to the drink, you will find that the calorie number will be on the steady rise. In fact, medium iced mocha served in a fast food outlet will contain on average, around 300 calories. That may not sound like much, but given that the daily maximum amount of calories for an adult male is 3000, then the issue becomes much more evident.

We have been selling Espresso Coffee Beans, in Southwestern Ontario and the Greater Metropolitan Detroit area since 1987. We also sell Milk Frothing Pitcher and all of the latest Espresso Machines.

Coffee Grinders

June 29th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Coffee Grinders

Coffee beans must be ground into a powder form in order to make them usable for making coffee or coffee based drinks. While it is possible to buy coffee pre-ground, coffee lovers know that the best cup of coffee comes from fresh ground coffee beans.

In recent years, the popularity of grinding coffee beans at home rather than at the grocer has surged and there are a multitude of coffee grinders on the market to choose from. There are also coffee makers with built in coffee grinders that grind the coffee as it is needed.

Coffee grinders, in addition to keeping coffee fresher longer because only what is needed is ground, offer another bonus, the ability to grind coffee to any strength or coarseness. If coffee is needed that isn’t very strong grind the coffee very large; however, for espresso or richer bolder coffee, grind the beans very coarse to maximize the amount of caffeine released.

Choosing a Grinder

There are many coffee grinders available to purchase for the home. There are electric grinders, manual grinders, coffee makers with grinders built –in, burr grinders and blade grinders. Choosing one can seem confusing. It doesn’t have to be confusing.

The first factor is going to be cost. Coffee grinders range in price from under twenty dollars to upwards of a hundred dollars. Next, decide how large the grinder needs to be. Grinders are also available in a range of sizes; from compact to large enough to grind several pounds at one time.

Burr or Blade

Blade coffee grinders are the most cost effective grinders, the easiest to use and the easiest to clean. These grinders have a blade that spins very fast to crush the beans, much like crushing ice in a blender. The longer the blade rotates the finer the coffee grounds become.

The biggest disadvantage to a blade grinder is that it is difficult to get a consistent grind and the chance that the beans will be burnt by the blades. If allowed to grind for too long of a period at one time the beans can become scorched due to the heat from the blades.

Burr coffee grinders on the other hand grind at a slower speed using a gear mechanism. The beans are fed into a hopper which releases the beans into the grinding mechanism.  The main advantage to burr grinders is the ability to get a more consistent grind and a slower grinding process which doesn’t burn the beans.

Large or small, burr or blade, there is a coffee grinder for every kitchen. For kitchens that rarely use a coffee maker, a small, inexpensive model that can be put away when not in use is fine, for heavy coffee drinkers, a larger, sturdier grinder may be needed. Whatever the case may be, coffee lovers can rest assured they are getting the freshest cup of joe when they use a grinder and prepare their own coffee beans.

Satisfying Kona Peaberry Coffee

June 29th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Whenever I have a friend traveling to Hawaii I insist they bring me back a bag of the famous Kona Peaberry coffee. Kona coffee is known for its smooth and mellow yet full-bodied flavor, a very deep, rich bean producing a very aromatic cup of coffee. Kona’s elevated location is perfect for growing the best beans. Its climate of sunny mornings, cloudy or rainy afternoons, combine to make a superior coffee bean.

Not every bag of coffee marked “Hawaiian” is made from the Peaberry coffee bean. To ensure that you are getting this perfect bean it must say “Kona Peaberry” coffee on the label. Only coffee grown within a small area of Kona, that is only one mile wide and 30 miles long, can be graded “prime” and labeled “Kona Peaberry Coffee.”

Because Kona Peaberry coffee has a lower acid content than other beans it brews a smoother tasting cup of coffee. This rare bean is unusual due to its cylinder shape, producing one bean instead of two, and makes up only five
percent of the coffee crop. Some believe that because of its differences it yields a darker and stronger but smoother bean.

The best way to experience this bean is to brew the Kona Peaberry coffee in a French Press coffee pot. Melding together the best bean with best process of brewing to yield the smoothest and at the same time, boldest cup of coffee. The Peaberry bean can be sampled, thoroughly enjoying its robust flavor. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Do not be ripped off by other Hawaiian blends claiming to be pure Kona coffee. Only 100% Kona Peaberry Coffee can be labeled so. Much of the coffee labeled “Hawaiian” are blends of a variety of Hawaiian coffee beans roasted together. Some may be labeled “Estate” which means that the beans were purchased from several different Hawaiian coffee estates. They will not be the smooth, rich, prime grade Peaberry coffee.

If you are willing to spend a little more you will receive double the flavor on your next cup of coffee if you have purchased Kona Peaberry Coffee.

Coffee from Coffee Beans

June 27th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

It’s amazing how much people all around the world love coffee. Actually, java is one of the most, if not, the most popular beverage worldwide. Normally, not just any old coffee is enough for most java lovers.

The coffee beans used play a major role in the route to a great latte, espresso shot or cappuccino. This is something everyone should truly consider before investing their hard-earned dollars in just any old cup of caffeinated liquid.

It doesn’t matter if you’re purchasing coffee beans or grounds for home use or buying a latte at the local coffee house. It’s crucial to remember that there is so much to choose from. In a world that virtually runs on espresso and coffee beans, you’ll always have plenty of Joe to pick and choose from.

It’s high time you took into account the cup of coffee you sip on a daily basis. Where does it come from or do you make it yourself? If you do produce your own java in-house, then you should think about buying only the freshest coffee beans.

Basically they won’t cost you much more than the commercial stuff you’ll find in the local grocery stores. A lot of select coffee shops and high-end grocers have fine coffee beans. You can even buy them by the pound and take pleasure in them at your convenience.

Look on the bag to see a packaging date if you do choose to buy “fresh” coffee beans. This allows you to estimate and calculate how much longer the beans will be fresh. A general rule of thumb for coffee beans is approximately two weeks.

The difference between fresh java and the stuff you’ll find in air-tight cans at the local grocery store is massive. The truth is that once you try fresh beans that are freshly ground, you’ll likely never go back to old coffee. One way to improve your chances of getting fresh coffee beans is by checking for vacuum sealed bags in coffee shops and chains.

When coffee beans are vacuum sealed, their life span is increased to about three months or even more. Therefore if you’re buying a Starbuck’s blend from your local Starbuck’s, be sure it is vacuum packed for freshness. Once you open it, the smell will inform you immediately of its freshness.
