If you love to start your day with a cup of coffee, you should know you can make your coffee taste so much better and fresher if you use a coffee grinder to crush the beans yourself. This causes your coffee to taste better because the grounds haven’t had time to oxidize due to exposure to air.
When you use a coffee grinder, you can always crush the amount of coffee you require so little, or any of the coffee beans will go to waste. You don’t have to worry about your coffee grounds going stale either.
When you buy coffee already ground, it goes stale over time. But when you buy whole coffee beans, the outer shell on the bean protects it from oxidization so the insides stay fresh, delicious and will retain their full flavor until the time you are ready to use your coffee grinder and break the beans apart.
There are just three kinds of coffee grinder, the crusher, the blade, and the burr grinder. Of which our personal favorite at the minute is the Kitchenaid coffee grinder. Obviously, there are advantages to each type of grinder as well as disadvantages that you should know before purchasing one. The type of grinder you use can influence the taste of your coffee.
The Blade Grinder
Blade coffee grinders are the most common and the least expensive coffee grinder. The advantages to owning a blade grinder are: they are affordable, they are an improvement over buying coffee already ground, they are durable and they are easy to clean.
Blade coffee grinders do have some drawbacks though. Due to the way they are constructed, they do not create a uniform consistency among the coffee grounds. They also do not produce a fine coffee ground. Because of this, a blade grinder cannot be used to grind coffee beans for espresso. The blades also create friction and heat that could be passed on to the coffee grounds and affect their flavor.
The Burr Grinder
Burr coffee grinders come in two types, conical burr grinders and flat wheel grinders. Of these the conical burr coffee grinder is the most popular because it spins at a slow rate and does not impart heat to the grounds. Flat wheel grinders spin at a rapid rate and heat up the grounds, which can negatively affect the flavor.
Coffee lovers choose conical burr coffee grinders over other styles for a couple of reasons. For one, they spin very slowly and do not heat the grounds. And secondly, they create coffee grounds that have a uniform consistency which translates into better tasting coffee. One such example is the Capresso Infinity conical burr which is getting a lot of praise throughtout the coffee world at the minute. In addition, a conical burr grinder can produce an extremely fine ground coffee that is a must if your tipple is Turkish coffee.
There are not many drawbacks to owning a conical grinder aside from their relatively expensive price tag. They can be noisy and are more difficult to clean than blade grinders.
The Crusher Grinder
A coffee crusher is one of the least popular coffee grinders. They work just like the name implies, by crushing the coffee bean. These produce coffee grounds of varying size, which can produce inferior coffee.
Conclusion
When considering what type of coffee grinder to buy, think about the consistency of the coffee grounds it will produce. The consistency plays a big role in the quality of the coffee. Also consider the price and how easy the grinder is to clean and operate. All types of coffee grinders will provide you with fresh coffee grounds that will make much better tasting coffee than store bought grounds that are starting to go stale.
