Within this bowl are grinding burrs that help to grind the whole coffee beans. 

Once the whole beans are placed into the bowl then the handle that is attached to the top of the bowl is rotated by hand in a circular fashion.  Subsequently, as the handle is turned the coffee beans are broken up and ground so that they are ready for brewing.

In addition, as the coffee is ground-up, it then filters down beneath the grinding bowl into a drawer which captures the grounded coffee.

In addition, because electricity is not required, this type of coffee grinder can be taken anywhere and utilized.  Specifically, it can be used on camping trips or if there is a power outage.
